Information Technology Degree
Why Information Technology?
We are in the information age, with uses of computers and the internet abounding in all areas of human activity. There are huge demands for information technology workers but the supply of technically competent professionals in the United States is not meeting the demand. The new information technology (IT) BS program at CMU is aimed to produce graduates who will meet that demand.
The IT major fills the gap between computer and scientists and general users and information systems. Students with a BS in IT will understand the fundamental concepts of information processing and the relationship between the underlying technology and end user applications. Equipped with this knowledge, they will be able to solve many computer and information related problems that are beyond the scope of general users. They will learn a systematic approach to the design of information and technology solutions to contemporary problems; be able to develop skills for system analysis; design and develop interactive, multimedia based information applications; have a strategic and technical understanding of networks and communications systems; can apply cognitive and organizational methods to the design of information technology applications.
