YOUR COMPUTER SCIENCE CURRICULUM

Computer Science is one of several programs offered by the Department of Computer Science. You can major in computer science, or you can major in computer science with an emphasis in secondary education and prepare to teach computer science in high school. The department also offers a major in information technology and several interdepartmental majors that combine studies in computer science with mathematics or industrial engineering technology.

The computer science program follows the curriculum guidelines set by the Association for Computing Machinery and includes courses in Principles of Computer Programming; Assembly Language and Computer Organization; Data Structures and Algorithms; Computer Design and Architecture. You also will take classes in mathematics, industrial engineering technology, computer science and information technology, depending on the program you choose.

Computer scientists are technical experts who work in the application of computer theory. They have solid problem-solving abilities and extensive programming skills, and they are prepared to undertake a variety of responsibilities, from inventing computer systems and the software they run to developing information-sharing technologies or designing computerized tools, robots and other devices.

As a computer scientist, you may work as a research specialist at a public university or government agency or as a systems analyst in a private business or industry. RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE

When you enroll in the computer science program at CMU, you will be invited to live in the Science and Technology Residential College with other students who share your interest in science and technology. The residential college offers many benefits, including opportunities for interaction with faculty, special programs and speakers, and supplemental instruction sessions. The residential college is located in Woldt Hall on the south end of campus, close to computer science laboratories and facilities.

GRADUATE STUDY

CMU's master's program in computer science will broaden your knowledge in a field that employs many highly specialized experts to work with today's powerful technology. You will study alongside more than a dozen faculty experts who have a variety of teaching and research interests, and you will have opportunities to conduct your own research or to work as a graduate assistant in the university's advanced UNIX, multimedia and other special purpose labs.

SPECIAL RESOURCES

Central Michigan University offers many resources to support your classroom learning.

Computer Facilities: Pearce Hall houses specialized laboratories with more than 200 powerful computers for graphics, multimedia, network, software engineering and database applications. Elsewhere at CMU, your residence hall is equipped with a computer room with e-mail and World Wide Web access stations, and your individual room is wired for access for your personal computer. Computer Laboratories are in various locations across campus, and many are open 24 hours a day.

Library Resources: Central Michigan's Park Library contains nearly a million books, periodicals and documents. A $50 million addition remodeling project, which was completed early 2002, provides advanced support for internet use, video distribution and interactive teleconferencing as well as better access to the print collections that have been the mainstays of the library services.
